The statutory visa route for foreign students studying in China. The X1 visa is for long-term students whose course in China lasts more than 180 days (degree programmes, language study and so on); after entry you must exchange it for a foreigner's residence permit within 30 days. The X2 visa is for short-term study or training lasting no more than 180 days. Applicants must already hold an admission notice issued by a Chinese educational institution and a Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Studying in China (JW201/JW202 form).

Core advantages

01

Study and residence in one step

After entering on an X1 visa you exchange it for a study-type residence permit within 30 days. It covers your whole course, so you avoid repeated renewals. The X2 visa allows easy travel in and out for stays of 180 days or less.

02

Legal part-time work

After one semester of study on an X1 visa, and with your school's approval, you can take legal part-time work in China, easing the cost of studying abroad.

03

Coverage of top universities

From Double First-Class universities such as Peking, Tsinghua, Fudan and Shanghai Jiao Tong to regional institutions with special strengths, nearly 3,000 institutions across China that can accept foreign students can support an application.

04

Support through every document

From contacting the institution to obtain the JW202 form, to visa submission, the post-arrival medical check and the residence permit, OTGEO provides bilingual support throughout.

04

Issuance and entry

05

Complete temporary residence registration within 24 hours of entry, then apply to the Exit-Entry Administration for a study-type residence permit within 30 days.

06

After graduation: transition and status change

After graduation you can apply for a work-type residence permit on the strength of a job offer (without leaving China), or apply for a 1-year internship visa to gain experience.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between X1 and X2, and which should I apply for?

X1 is for long-term study in China of more than 180 days (bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, long-term language study); after entry you must exchange it for a residence permit. X2 is for short-term study or training of no more than 180 days. The test is whether the course lasts more than 180 days.

Can I apply for an X visa without a JW201/JW202 form?

No. The JW201/JW202 form (Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Studying in China) is a required document for an X visa. The receiving institution applies for it through the Chinese Ministry of Education system and mails it to you. Applications without the form will be returned.

Can I switch to a work visa after entering on an X1 visa?

In principle, yes, but you must first cancel the study-type residence permit, and your employer then applies for a Foreigner's Work Permit and a Z visa (or applies directly in China for a work-type residence permit). The exact route depends on your qualifications and your employer's qualifications. Ask an OTGEO adviser to assess feasibility.

How much does studying in China cost, and what does it cover?

Costs vary widely by institution and city. Tuition: about ¥15,000–40,000 per year for a bachelor's degree at a public university, and about ¥20,000–50,000 per year for a master's. Accommodation is about ¥500–2,000 per month; living costs are about ¥2,000–5,000 per month. Also budget for the visa fee (a few hundred yuan), the medical examination (about ¥500–800), the residence permit (about ¥400–800 per year) and insurance (about ¥400–800 per year). Scholarships (the Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship and others) can cover most costs, and OTGEO can help you apply.

What are the main reasons X visa applications are refused?

Common reasons include: information on the JW201/JW202 form does not match the visa application form; the admitting institution is not qualified to accept foreign students; insufficient proof of funds; and a passport valid for less than 6 months. Have OTGEO pre-check your full document set before submission to ensure the information is consistent. If you are refused, you can reapply after supplementing your documents; there is usually no mandatory waiting period.

What routes are there to stay and work in China after graduation?

There are three main routes: (1) after graduation, apply directly for a work permit and residence permit on the strength of a bachelor's degree or above plus a job offer (no need to leave China to switch to a Z visa) — this is the most convenient; (2) in cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, outstanding foreign graduates who meet the conditions can convert directly from X1 to a work-type residence permit; (3) first apply for a 1-year internship visa (1-year stay) to gain experience, then switch to a formal work residence permit. OTGEO can assess your qualifications and recommend the best route for changing status.
